The large artificial submerged reef at Narrowneck is an important element in the strategy funded by Gold Coast City Council to protect the renowned Surfers Paradise beaches from erosion during storms. Construction of the Narrowneck Reef using thick nonwoven needlepunched staple-fiber geotextiles has proven effective in marine conditions. This project has pushed the boundaries of geocontainer use to new levels and raised new questions. Pressure transducers inserted into a bag have already helped understand the way in which the sand-filled containers actually absorb wave energy. However, further research into areas such as stability, durability, energy absorption and the best layouts for surfing is still to be completed.
