A new method for assessment of the rail lifetime was proposed. The service wear of heat-treated rails (hardness 332 HB) and untreated ones (hardness 266 HB) was examined. Both abrasive-adhesive and contact-fatigue wears of the rails were taken into consideration. The lifetime characteristics were determined from the wear measurements on rails in the Silesian region. The high hardness of rails resulted in an increase in their abrasion resistance but not their contact-fatigue resistance.
