This paper describes the control law for engaging and disengaging a dry clutch used for connecting an engine to a drivetrain in a Parallel Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The main components of a dynamic PHEV powertrain model and corresponding coordinated control laws are described. The model is an extention of a conventional powertrain model that includes an ICE, and a converterless automatic transmission. The conventional powertrain model is validated using experimental test data confirming accurate emulation of dynamic components of the prehybridized vehicle. Additional data from a similar PHEV are used in validating the driveline and clutch models. The PHEV model is developed by modeling the additional traction motor transaxle and gearing. The subsequent coordinated control law development is described and vehicle operational strategy is discussed. Simulations depicting the dynamic behavior of the engine clutch engagement and disengagement control are shown. This PHEV dynamic model enables the development of a measure of performance and allows insight into the dominant dynamic effects in the process of control law synthesis. Additional, this PHEV model can be used determine optimum PHEV component combinations, thus eliminating unnecessary vehicle builds.
