Satellite flywheels utilize the solar energy when the satellite is on the sun side of earth. When the satellite is in the earth shadow, the flywheel supplies the inboard instruments with electric energy. This regime of operation causes that angular velocity of the flywheel changes over the wide range. The magnetic bearings are suitable to suspend the flywheel in the vacuum environment. In addition, they can realize other tasks, like for example automatic balancing, diagnostics, or sensor run-out compensation. The control system of magnetic bearings should account for variable plant dynamics, with parameters dependent on angular velocity. The modal approach to control flywheel motion is presented. The control scheme is developed separately for translatory and for rotary motion. The generated results demonstrate that the developed approach is correct and straightforward.
