Electromagnetic interference (EMI) into line side signalling/telecommunication cables is an inevitable consequence of electrified railway systems. It is important to calculate the induced voltage caused by this interference as it provides a basis for important decisions, such as whether or not booster transformers should be employed to reduce the magnitude of this voltage. The method of calculating the induced voltage analytically is discussed and a new approach using mathematical modelling technique with Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is introduced.
