The operation of helicopters from small naval vessels presents a demanding challenge for pilots. During landing, the pilot must track a deck moving in six degrees of freedom in response to random sea motion. For a small ship such as a frigate, the flight deck is correspondingly small, leaving little margin for position error. In the case of high sea states, deck motions are large and it is necessary to attempt the landing during a narrow time window of a quiescent sea. In addition to these challenges, pilot workload is increased by the effect of the ship airwake on the rotor response. The airwake contains spatial and temporal gradients which affect the rotor response and fuselage loading, thereby necessitating corrective action by the pilot. The paper discusses experiments that were conducted at sub-scale in a wind tunnel. The effects of changes to ship geometry, wind speed and direction are reported.
