Following on from the practical application of 1-DOF loop shaping H-infinity control to vehicle AOS control, this paper has described the successful design, simulation and vehicle test of the H-infinity based vehicle driven-idle control. It shows once again the high capability and ideal features of the technique by satisfying the challenging control requirements of the vehicle drivetrain. In summary, the advantages and benefits from the robust control are: 1. A technically more advanced method for producing a better and well balanced robustness (to model uncertainty and disturbance) using the loop-shaping H-infinity design. 2. A strong and superior system robustness to uncertainties and disturbances. This not only enables the implementation of the controller in a fixed gain and (possibly preferable) asynchronous manner but also gives a good robustness to real-time powertrain mode and parameter variation, and to speed and fuel disturbances. 3. Optimal fuelling, in the sense of lower, smoother and more predictable fuelling, and a desirable high gear driven-idle control performance are also achieved.
