Finite element analysis of suspension coil springs is standard practice for investigating spring behaviour during compression. One increasingly important aspect of spring behaviour under recent demand is precise control of the spring's force line. Proper control reduces side loading on the damper assembly, which increases ride comfort. The force line is the reaction force axis produced by a coil spring and its interaction with the spring seats during compression. Not only does the geometric configuration of the spring and seats affect the force line, but it has also been seen experimentally that the spring seat material has an effect. Elastomeric materials such as rubber are used in spring assemblies to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), but their influence to spring force line axis has yet to be investigated. It is impossible to predict these effects without the use of FEA software. Finite element models utilizing beam elements for the spring are sufficient for analysis of basic spring behaviour, including stress distribution and rate estimation. The interaction of the spring with the seat dominates the force line position. This contact between the bodies is difficult to model accurately with beam elements if there is significant deflection of the bodies. If the seat material is metal, beam element models predict force line position well, however, rubber seats require the use of solid element models, so that the contact phenomena can be correctly handled. As a comparison between metal and rubber spring seats, four finite element models were constructed. These include one with metal spring seats, another with metal and rubber seat, and two with modified upper seats. The construction and results of several finite element simulations will be presented, correlating various configurations and experimental data. The effect of using rubber in coil spring seats will be outlined.
