Pneumatic conveying involves complex interactions among the properties of the material conveyed, the dimensions of the conveying system, the pressure of the carrier gas, the mass flowrate of the conveyed material, the solids-loading ratio, the stream velocity and other system parameters. The present article deals with measuring the mass flowrate of the conveyed material and properly analyzing the findings. The device most commonly used to measure the material flowrate during pneumatic conveying is the load cell. Either the supply hopper or the reception hopper is mounted on load cells. Readings from the load cells are either fed into a data logger or computer, or recorded on a chart. In principle there are two types of conveying systems: dilute-phase conveying and dense-phase conveying. Practical examples for conveying of sugar, cement (sliding-bed flow) and polyethylene pellets (plug flow) are described. All technologies mentioned in this article deals with conventional conveying systems, in which the material to be conveyed is simply fed into the pipeline and blown or sucked through. However, many materials that are conveyable only in dilute phase happen to be either friable or abrasive. So, much research in recent years has sought to develop innovative systems that can convey such materials in dense phase. The new system developed to date address that need by 'conditioning' the flowing material. For instance, pulsations can be applied at the feed point. Or, along the conveying-system line, either bypass pipes are installed to artificially create permeability,k or air injection is used to artificially create air retention.
