In many technical areas nowadays biodegradable lubricants play an important role regarding optimum lubrication of the lubricating points in combination with the highest degree of environmental consciousness. Using conventional lubricants already helps our environment by reducing friction, noise and wear as well as by saving energy. Applying high performance biodegradable lubricants instead of conventional ones leads additionally to lower contamination of water, air and soil. The very important share of environmentally harmless lubricants can be seen by considering the following figures: in 1992 the world's lubricant consumption was approx. 37 million tons, in Germany approx. 1.2 million tons. The share of the so-called total loss lubricants is as much as 40.000 tons and is divided on applications like concrete parting agents, for lubrication of chain saws, wire ropes, two stroke engines as well as for applications in the railway technique. Only this railway sector needs an amount of approx. 5000 tons per year for lubrication of such very sensitive lubricating points on switches, rails and wheel flanges. This lecture describes some examples of the use of biodegradable, high-performance lubricants for wheel flange and switch lubrication as well as for rail head treatment.
