Oil lubricated continuously variable transmissions (CVT) are a drivetrain technology that can reduce overall fuel consumption, improve comfort and driveability. In case of a PIV/LuK-rocker pin chain, power is transmitted by the chain links and the difference of pulling forces between tight side and slack side. In the VDT pushing V-belt type CVT, power is transmitted by rings and blocks. Lubricant is a main influence on the minimum required clamping force for transmission of power. The coefficient of friction under running conditions in the variator is difficult to predict. The zetamax-method is an experimental instrument to estimate the properties of lubricating oil, focused on the necessary clamping force. In traction drives the torque is transmitted by traction in elastohydrodynamic contacts. The fluid properties decisively influence the function, the efficiency and the durability of the traction components. Extremely high contact pressures in connection with slip require sufficient protection against scuffing. The function of traction drives and the contact conditions are presented in half and full toroidal types of traction drives.
