Complex rail nodes (points of convergence for dense and varied traffic) are precious resources that form weak links in a railway network. A slow-down at a node is likely to propagate and amplify delays on all the lines using the node. The SAFIR project targets optimum node operation through traffic fluidification, achieved by controlling train speed upline of nodes. An algorithm has been developed and validated by a two-way line with a rail-traffic simulator. Results are encouraging, and further improvements are expected with integration of the technological building blocks making up the new-generation control and instrumentation system (GPS, GSM-R, ERTMS).
