Over the years, various types of plates, wraps and beams have been used for structural reinforcement. These are normally fabricated from steel, concrete or polymers. However, a problem common to all these reinforcement methods is that of transferring load from the old structure into the new reinforcing elements. Recent studies show that Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) can overcome this problem. In particular, it has been shown that SMAs have potential for a number of large-scale structural applications offshore including reinforcement, clamping and jacking.
