Interior lighting in most of the vehicles on the market today is purely functional. New lighting technologies which involve further electronic networking and stimulate new customer expectations in relation to the personalized use of their vehicles, give pause for thought about expanding interior lighting requirements. Taking a holistic analysis of the physiological and psychological influences of lighting on passengers when driving at night as a starting point, an interior lighting concept was devised and the acceptance of this concept was tested on a representative group of test persons. The experimental parameters were exterior lighting factors, the age of the test persons and the arrangement, distribution and brightness of the lighting. Using lab and road trials, it was possible to demonstrate that by using a minimal luminance level, under certain circumstances, the adaptation time for moving gaze between the road and interior could be reduced. Subjective evaluations to improve orientation and space perception also yielded positive results. Overall, the acceptance of continuous interior lighting with minimal luminance to meet all the criteria is very high if this also includes a dimming option. Generally, the results show that interior lighting which goes beyond the purely functional should become the basic component of the interior concepts of the future.
