Lighting technology and the algorithms of the system control will be a distinctive feature of Adaptive Frontlighting Systems (AFS). Volkswagen uses powerful tools for the simulation of this new generation of frontlighting systems, namely GEOSim which is developed under MATLAB/SIMULINK. GEOSim was especially developed for the simulation of AFS control. The interest in AFS steadily increases the complexity of the headlight system. Apart from the headlight the system also consists of several sensors, which record the surroundings of a car. The electronic control unit (ECU), which is also part of the system, analyses the transmitted signals and activates the different functions of the frontlighting system. All this parts lead to an increase of system complexity and immediately affects the development process. The paper presents the main features of the tool and the relevant results of current investigations. The main aims of the tool are: the modelling of the path the road follows (road layout) according to dynamic bending light control; the analysis and comparison of various measurements of vehicle dynamics; the statistical data analysis; the portrait of the modellied road layout and the light distribution using AFSim; the direct implement of algorithms into an ECU prototype. In combination with AFSim GEOSim is a productive tool for the efficient development of new frontlighting systems. In the near future No. 8 'AFS lighting functions' and No. 9 'hardware adaption' will be available for simulation and enable a more complete simulation of AFS at the PC or in Virtual Reality studios. If required additional input values, e.g. navigation system data, video sensor data as well as radar and laser sensor data can be integrated into the simulation.
