The lecture shows the results of a luminance-examination for rear- and brake-lights under night conditions with a conclusion, which demonstrates to us, that for automotive signal-lamps the luminance is the key characteristic in traffic. Currently in the ECE-Regulations, only the light intensities are the evaluation parameter for automotive signal-lamps. However the light intensity is a mere measurable which does not tell anything on how brightness affects an observer. To be able to describe the brightness of a signal-lamp, it is necessary to know the luminance, which is the light intensity related to an illuminated area. This investigation shows, that there is the possibility, that in current traffic rear- and brake-lights cannot be separately identified anymore. In future this risk will increase even more, because new light sources, for example the LED, will be used more and more. In addition, the minimum size of lamp housings, limited by the heat caused by the common incandescent bulb, will not exist and therefore no Ionger limit the design possibilities. As a result the optimum luminance for rear- and brake-lamps were determined as mentioned previously. These optimal luminances were found in inhouse investigations. They have to be confirmed under real road conditions. Also, bad weather conditions were not taken into account. They could make an adaptation of the optimal luminances necessary. In conclusion, the recommendation is to use these results as a base of discussion for future harmonization of the different international legal requirements.
