This paper outlines four computer simulation methods for predicting durability of cab-in-white (CIW) structures, using MSC.Nastran and MSC.Fatigue. Each of the four methods discussed have benefits and penalties. Each is appropriate for a specific type of situation. 1) The quasi-static durability analysis method is best suited for situations where the dominant frequencies for load inputs are far below the dominant resonances of the part. This method is the simplest to perform, but fails to capture any dynamic response. 2) Frequency based durability predictions are best suited for situations where the load input is dominated by a few frequencies. This method can have a lot bookkeeping, which can be greatly simplified if only a few frequencies are involved. 3) Direct transient based durability predictions are best suited for analysis of single events of short duration. The space and cpu requirements are too great for a large model, or long duration event. 4) Modal superposition durability prediction is very well suited for analyzing large FEM models due to multiple events of any length. As such, it is ideally suited for full CIW durability analysis. Each method has a cost in data management and computational effort associated with it. This must be recognized up front, and incorporated into the analysis plan.
