Oncoming mobile radio systems for railways, e.g. GSM-R or the radio network for the german maglev-train Transrapid, require specific planning software, which differs from planning tools e.g. for GSM due to the differences in network topology. Main differences are the shape of the supplied area, which is a narrow corridor along the track, and the velocity of the mobile station. Radio networks for railway systems usually consist of several base stations, which are placed along the track to supply the mobile station, placed on top of the train. High gain antennas ensure focusing of radiated power along the track. Use of microwave or mm-wave frequencies provides high transmission datarates. In this paper, a network planning tool is presented, which is especially designed for planning mobile radio communication networks of railway systems. In a novel heuristic approach, the optimum base station positions along the track are evaluated, considering that a given maximum bit error ratio should not be exceeded, when the mobile is running along the track. The shape of the supplied areas leads to a special evaluation strategy: At first the base stations are positioned under the conditon, that the first fresnel-zone between a base station and a mobile station at any position along the track should be free of obstacles. In a second step, bit error ratio along the track is considered. The evaluation is based on a deterministic channel model, which provides the complex channel impulse response. Modulation, antenna characteristics and polarization are also taken into account. For first results, a system design study for the track of the maglev train 'Transrapid' in Lathen/Emsland is performed. It is shown, that the use of circular polarization and antenna diversity in this systern, operating at 39 GHz, significantly reduces the bit error ratio.
