Screw compressors have many advantages compared to other types of compressors. Compared with the reciprocating compressor, which is also a positive displacement type for high pressure application, the screw compressor has a simple construction and less wearing parts. All the parts have strong and solid figures and the rotating motion causes only low vibration. The efficiency is good at high compression ratio, that causes more oil flow because of lower suction pressure, but it depends also on viscosity of the lubricant. The discharge gas temperature is low because of oil injection and the needed installation space is small. The high pressure screw compressor would become more popular in the environmental conscious, especially in the market of CO2 refrigeration, which should be used because of its low environmental impact, but most existing refrigeration compressors can not handle the high pressure. Another important application for the high pressure screw compressor is natural gas compression. Natural gas is used more and more instead of oil and coal due to the clean energy. As gas wells have lower pressure up to 2 Mpa, but main natural gas pipelines require 5 to 10 Mpa pressure usually, high pressure compressors are necessary. Reciprocating compressors have been used for this application, but screw compressors are expected because of the known advantages. Future problems of the high pressure screw compressors are to develop optimum rotor profile and to find an ideal lubricant quantity and viscosity in order to realize better compressor efficiencies.
