A numerical method based on the induced velocities has been developed to simulate propeller-rudder interaction. Propeller induced velocities are computed at the control points of the rudder either directly from the singularities distributed on the propeller and its wake, or by interpolation of the velocity filed computed with a RANSE code where the propeller has been replaced by an equivalent force field. The induced velocity distribution on the rudder surface is then explicitly integrated within the BEM rudder simulation. Both methods yield similar results. After a comparison with experimental results, the system is used to simulate one configuration using different propellers. The principal finding is that the hydrodynamic coefficients of the rudder do not solely depend on the global performance of the propeller.
