At the 2002's Coach and Bus Show, organised by the UK's Confederation of Passenger Transport at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre (NEC), there were numerous reminders of the particular ingenuity demanded of passenger vehicle engineers. Though, for obvious cost reasons, having to use many of the same main components, most notably engines, as their truck designer colleagues, the bus fraternity faces practical constraints in being able to provide the most spacious passenger accommodation. In combination with levels of refinement uncalled for in trucks of similar size and weight, in terms of ride quality, noise and vibration suppression, they must also pay heed to ease of passenger access. For urban bus services, with the needs of the elderly and disabled in mind, nationally or locally decreed standards are now commonly set, regulating door opening widths, step heights, floor ramp angles and so on. Among the single-deck city bus chassis having their first public showing at the NEC were a clutch of models from Turkish Company BMC. The name owes its origins to the former British carmaker, but there is no longer any UK holding in the enterprise. An important British connection is maintained though: all the BMC Chassis being offered on the UK market are powered by Cummins diesel engines manufactured in the American company's large plant at Darlington, Co Durham.
