The biggest problem for image sensor systems with a single camera is rather low accuracy due to the shadows of the vehicles, reflection of lights, etc. In addition, during the congestion, the number of some vehicles flowing too close may be recognized less than actual. To solve this problem, a new system with double cameras as stereo eyes has been developed and tested. This system has two cameras installed with a slight distance and coordinates two images taken from the two cameras. Doing this, the parallax of images of the corresponding objects is measured and then distance information about the object is derived to detect the object. Extensive experiments have revealed that the accuracy of measurements of traffic parameters during congested period is higher than 98% in all environment and that space occupancy can be measured directly with high accuracy, This report will explain de details of the image sensor system with stereo eyes, results of the experiments, future applications and problems yet to be solved.
