Wheel and rail vibration absorbers were tested at the Portland Tri-Met and New Jersey Transit light rail systems in the United States. The tests at Tri-Met included treatment of tangent and curved track with rail vibration absorbers and treatment of Bochum resilient wheels with vibration absorbers. The tests at the New Jersey Transit included treatment of Bochum 84 wheels with vibration absorbers. Only the curved track test results obtained at Tri-Met are discussed here. Third octave wayside noise levels and rail vibration levels are presented for a curve fitted with rail vibration absorbers, and under car noise reductions for wheel vibration absorbers at other curves are discussed. Wheel modal response data are also presented. Wheel squeal was not eliminated, but there was a reduction of the probability and duration of wheel squeal with the wheel vibration absorbers. Rail vibration energy was significantly lower with rail treated with vibration absorbers relative to untreated rail.
