A ground vibration test on the prototype of a new aircraft is often regarded as necessary in order to make reliable flutter predictions for flight tests and to update the mathematical model of the aircraft. Due to very high development costs for such aircraft, the goal is to strive for a significantly shorter testing time. However, a degradation in the quality or reliability of the results is not acceptable because of the great impact they have on flutter stability. The French ONERA and the German DLR are cooperating on a test project to meet the necessary requirements. New techniques and test strategies were proven in a joint ground vibration test on an Airbus A340-300 in 1999. This article summarizes the approach and results of the project.
