The control of fuel delivery to minimize drivetrain oscillations is a major benefit to vehicle refinement and driveability. This paper describes the application of robust H-infinity loop-shaping control to the speed-fuel control loop. This is believed to be the first successful application of the 1-DOF loop shaping based H-infinity control for vehicle AOS control in practice. The successful design, simulation and vehicle test of the AOS control shows the strong capability and ideal features of the technique in satisfying both the driveability and robustness requirements of the vehicle drivetrain control system. In summary, the advantages and benefits from the 1-DOF control are: A technically more advanced method for producing a better balance between performance and robustness using the loop-shaping Hinfinity design. A strong system robustness to uncertainties (including delay) and disturbances. This not only enables the controller to be implemented in the preferred asynchronous manner but also gives good robustness to speed and to fuel disturbances, with a moderate sampling rate and fixed controller gains for each gear selection. The fueling is more optimal in the sense of being lower, being smoother and being more predictable. To sum up, the new 1-DOF control has shown some key benefits and advantages for vehicle AOS control system. This together with the continuing progress in the robustness (to low speed delay), controller order reduction and integerisation implementation, make it very promising for future use in production vehicles.
