This paper will describe the development concept of the new CAN module for embedded microcontrollers targeting automotive applications. Currently CAN have been used as one of the most popular control network systems which supports the data transactions up to the speed of 1 Mbit/s. In today's high class passenger vehicles there are more than 50 ECUs existing to control each system. Due to expansion of data transactions via CAN, data handling by the module or by the controller has been a major subject. The authors have developed a method to handle the large amount of data with the least CPU (Central Processing Unit) overhead to provide maximum performance of the CPU. This will be shown with a simulation result in comparison of the new CAN module and the conventional CAN module, along with an example to show the efficiency in an application such as ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) system. And furthermore this new CAN will have the capability to cooperate with the latest requirements of the CAN specification such as the time triggered CAN of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standard. In vehicle real time application more and more electronic controlled systems will appear to contribute to the technology innovation. Networking is and will remain the key factor for control systems and CAN will remain state of the art. The new developed HITCAN module offers a high functionality because of the 32 mailboxes functionality and the implementation of a timer that gives the capability to manage the new required time triggered CAN applications. As simulation results using HITCAN in a real-time application, the CPU load for data reception was reduced 90 % to the conventional HCAN and for data transmission the CPU load was held down to 0.25 % in 32 message / 20 ms task application. This shows a very low CPU load of handling messages both data receive and data transmission and is suitable for real-time control network applications.
