Overworked air traffic control causes numerous flight delays. Increasing demand brings mounting pressure, likely to cause lasting saturation, with airport infrastructures running at full capacity. If en-route control is not to become a limiting factor on air traffic, the air space around major airports must be regarded as a scarce resource, and managed accordingly. This will require a number of constraints on traffic, aimed at reducing the complexity of control operations. A number of solutions have been advanced with a view to optimizing air traffic control. Developments over the mediumterm future will probably continue to involve centralized coordination of en-route networks and local solutions for sectorization.
