More Electric Car (MEC) concept emphasizes utilizing of electrical power to drive more automotive conventional systems and to facilitate new introduced luxury loads. Improving fuel economy, emissions, reliability, and comfortness are the main motivations towards the MEC concept, which necessitates going to a higher system voltage such as the proposed 42 V. On the other hand, hybrid electric vehicles are promising the most practical solution to reach very high fuel economy as well as very low emissions. However, full hybridized vehicles require expensive high-voltage insulation for the electric propulsion system. Furthermore, there is a drastic change required in the conventional cars to obtain hybrid electric vehicles. Therefore, more electric cars have received more attentions than hybrid electric cars from both the automotive industry and academy in the recent years. The author presents the suitability of Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM) drives for the current intensive environment of the proposed low-voltage system. In fact, there is not much change in weight, volume, and cost of the SRM for the low-voltage traction, compared to the high-voltage traction. In order to have advantages of both MEC and HEV concepts, this paper presents that lightly hybridized cars are feasible with SRM based traction systems. The main advantage of the proposed system is having a common low-voltage (42 V) electrical power system for traction as well as other automotive loads. Different power electronic converters and electric machines have been designed and simulated for the low-voltage and high-voltage SRM based propulsion systems. Finally, suitability of 42 V SRM drives and their advantages compared to the 300 V drives have been verified.
