The contribution gives a brief survey of new developments in the field of steel sheet and metallic coatings for fuel tanks. Examples are given for the current use in modern vehicles. Hot-dip aluminized sheet steel is described as an example for use in the German market. It has been used as standard coating for fuel tanks already for more than 12 years. The properties of steel sheet protected against corrosion with and without additional organic coating and examples of the application in the field of fuel tanks are presented. Reference is made to stainless steel as an alternative to coated quality steel sheet. All steel materials for fuel tanks, both deep drawing quality steel and stainless steel, feature excellent properties in use. They have a high forming potential which enables an optimum packaging also in conjunction with innovative forming and joining processes, i.e. a filling volume for the fuel which is as large as possible.
