During the last ten years, automotive engine performances have been notably improved. The loads applied to the different moving elements - pistons, connecting-rods, crank-shaft - have greatly increased. In order to have a better knowledge of bearing mechanical behaviour, the authors have developed a set of computer codes that give precise descriptions of lubrication parameters in all the bearings that link pistons, connecting-rods and crank-shaft to the engine block. After a description of some lubrication breakdown examples, the chosen models for the EHD lubrication study of engine bearings are described. Efficient codes have been developed for the transient study of lubricated bearings. The formulation considers elastic distortion of big and small end connecting rod bearings, main bearings as well as crank shaft and engine block deformation. Mass conserving models are used in the active areas. These codes were used to analyse the lubrication characteristics of actual engines in the context of the large improvement of engine performance during the last ten years. The obtained results give a better knowledge of the bearing behaviour under these extreme running conditions and can help the engineers to define design modifications to reduce stresses in bearing and sleeve material as well as power loss due to high lubricant shearing. In order to develop fast codes for transient thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, simplified 2D models were considered and validated. Future development will consider full 3D models.
