A new design for a shipping and storage container has been developed for a temperature-sensitive, cryopreserved biotech product. The main goals were to reduce container's size, weight, and cost by taking advantage of vacuum panels for a cryopreserved shipping and storage container. The shipping of cryopreserved materials is expensive because of the shipping container's size and weight. The typical large containers are less than optimal for customers who must store or dispose of them. Vacuum panels are more efficient and require less dry ice. This allows for a reduction of the heaviest component. The vacuum panel shipper may be used for periods of several days rather than the typical overnight delivery. Costs were reduced through optimization of dry ice usage in order to reduce weight and size. The container may be used as a cryogenic freezer allowing multiple access by the end user over several days. The design improves customer access and virtually eliminates contact and handling of dry ice. The design includes International Safe Transit Association's temperature profiles and shock/vibration requirements for expedited shipments. The container may be left in any orientation and still maintain appropriate temperatures.
