Traditional automotive access systems are rapidly evolving and now include vehicles that don't require the physical use of a key device for interior access or to start the vehicle. New systems will be able to display the last access status of the vehicle, even while out of communication range. OEMs are introducing systems with new functions such as remote starting, window closure from long distance and systems that prevent people from locking themselves out of their vehicle. Of course, it is also the expectation of the automobile consumer that with the additional functionality and control, the product will have increased reliability, robustness, and security. This paper will address some of the consumer needs, what enabling technologies are required, and how the technology is evolving.
