Tube hydroforming is now a well-accepted technique in the automotive industry. Not only exhausts and underbody components but also structural components will be adopted. Structural body-in-white components are more complex and demanding, in respect of manufacturing and performance requirements and dimensional tolerances. Such components need more sophisticated simulation tools. The whole hydroform process chain must be incorporated in the simulation, e.g tube making, tube bending, performing and finally hydroforming. Neglecting one of these steps in the analyses can introduce mistakes and surprises. New tube making techniques will be required so that high strength materials can deliver the higher diameter to wall thickness ratios introducing tubes needed to support lightweight applications and achieve packaging requirements. This resulted in a new product named Tubular Blanks, a thin walled hollow section with improved forming properties. The automotive industry looks for the right material on the right place. As a result, hydroforming doesn't stick to steel only but also stainless steel and aluminium are important alternatives. Every material shows specific properties to be used in a proper way. (VDEh)
