Powertrain neutral idle control is a technology aimed at improving fuel economy during urban driving, as well as reducing engine vibrations transmitted to the passenger compartment. A new coordinated engine-transmission control approach for the neutral idle imput clutch application phase is presented in this paper. Due to the Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) nature of the control problem, an optimal Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with Explicit Model Following (EMF) is used to allow the system dynamic reponse to track two desired trajctories for engine and turbine speeds. The results show that the proposed control strategy can achieve satisfactory performance.
