In this comparison between a low sulfur D2 diesel fuel and a F-T (Fischer-Tropsch) diesel fuel, the emissions were substantially reduced without optimizing the engine to take advantage of the unique properties of the fuel. Testing as both a heavy-duty engine and as a heavy light-duty vehicle revealed similar percent changes in emission reductions for the F-T diesel fuel when the FTP was compared to the EPA transient cycle. Both cycles include cold-start testing and city-like driving conditions. However, with more aggressive driving cycles (HFET and US06), the percent change in the total hydrocarbons, air toxics, and total aldehydes and ketones was much less indicating that the emissions for the more severe driving conditions are affected to a lesser extent by changing fuels. Conversely, particulate emissions produced a larger reduction with the more aggressive driving cycles. When comparing the three heavy light-duty cycles, an increase in the aggressiveness of the cycle was also observed to reduce the amount of improvement in total hydrocarbons, air toxics, and total aldehydes and ketones and increase the improvement in particulate emissions. Since these emission reductions were achieved without modifying the engine, the injection timing could probably be advanced to improve the fuel economy and particulate emissions, while the NOx emissions would increase slightly. Conversely, the injection timing could be retarded to reduce the NOx emissions while increasing the particulates. Converting to a F-T diesel fuel would result in an immediate reduction of both regulated and unregulated emissions without additional aftertreatment or modification of the engine, and these reductions may be possible for any driving conditions or engine application.
