This paper presents quantitative and qualitative comparison study results of electric machine configurations for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) traction and power generation applications. The study was conducted with regard to three major electric machine configurations as induction motor, permanent magnet motor, and switched reluctance motor. Low cost technological advances, new government programs and regulations, as well as public awareness with regard to fuel economy and air pollution issues have resulted in increasing demand for HEVs. Parallel, series, or dual hybrid vehicle configurations with one or two electric motors and for generators are necessary for propulsion and power generation. Electric machines must be highly efficient, lightweight, reliable, compact, affordable, and able to operate with low noise levels to satisfy consumer requirementsfor HEVs. This paper summarizes the tradeoff study results of the three most common electric motor configurations for HEVs. The study focuses on efficiency, power density, noise vibration, and costs associated with manufacturing of these configurations. The advantages and disadvantages of the three configurations are also presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of future trends for electric machine applications in the HEV industry.
