Conventional Marine diesel engine lubricants are formulated using a combination of detergents to provide base number, detergency and other additional properties. Different detergents have different soap chemistries with the most common ones being alkylated calcium salicylate, calcium sulphonate and calcium spulphurised phenate. The properties of the individual detergents, and the attributes which contribute to their performance, are well known. Technical evaluation of some detergents produced by this process has been carried out in Trunk Piston Engine Oil (TPEO) formulations. The results are very promising and the expectation is that these components will extend the performance limits of Marine engine lubricants. The potential for reduction of the additive system treat rate, improved performance and the logistics flexibility offered by the new process, should provide the route for the formulation of top performance, cost-effective Marine engine lubricants.
