Initiated by the AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International) the US (United States) TACOM (Tank-Automotive Armament Command) and others in 1992 the IGVC (igent Ground Vehicle Competition) challenges university students to develop autonomous mobile robotic systems in a semi-structured outdoor environment. A general overview is given about the design, construction and testing processes involved in the University of Alberta's ,,Polar Bear' autonomous mobile robot. The main goal is to develop a rugged, rough-terrain fully and semi- autonomous mobile robotic system for use in industry and in a student competition. The award-winning University of Alberta team of Engineering, Computer Science and Industrial Design students responsible for the Polar Bear compete annually against other robotic vehicles at the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition.
