This article describes a test-based activity which was performed to determine the principal modes of vibration of a complete and furnished carriage for subsequent correlation with a mathematical representation of the structure included in a numerical model of the complete vehicle. By isolating the carriage from the bogies, it was possible to apply conventional modal analysis procedures to the data measured from this nominally linear structural system in order to determine the first global modes of the carriage. However, over the medium and high frequency ranges, an alternative approach was required to identify the relatively highly-damped and closely-coupled complex modes which are exhibited. Furthermore when the damping elements of the suspension systems were reinstalled, the experimental analysis was extended in order to permit subsequent validation of a full vehicle model incorporating these significantly non-linear elements.
