Odor filtration becomes more and more important for the automotive industry. There are two main problems: odor from outside the car and odor, which can be generated inside the cabin. Due to this, two different filtration concepts were developed. The first one is a high end filter for the ventilation system of a car. The second concept is a static filter, which can be placed in large surfaces inside the cabin like the roof or the seats. On the basis of measured data, two different types of cabin air filters will be shown. The first type is based on the foam technology and thr second type is based on a new technology, which leads to a better efficiency and a lower pressure drop. The measured data demonstrate, that not only the change in design but also the choose of the right carbon leads to large improvements of the filter capability. In addition to the laboratory tests according to DIN-71460-2 a special odor test has been performed to get more information, what type of activated carbon and what quantity is necessary for an efficient odor filtration. The second concept is demonstrated by the investigation of the adsorptive system helsasorb, which was placed in the roof of the cabin. helsasorb was designed for the static adsorption of hydrocarbons. The test results demonstrate, that the static filter yields to a remarkable reduction of hydrocarbons and odor in the cabin. To sum up, the both concepts are powerful solutions for reducing odor in the cabin air. The best comfort can be achieved by combining both.
