Since the automotive industry is increasingly using materials that enable the construction of lighter and safer cars, OCAS/SIDMAR developed (ultra) high strength carbon steel sheet grades to meet this demand. Typical properties and application characteristics of IF HSS steels, Bake Hardening, Dual Phase, Transformation Induced Plasticity and Complex Phase steels are discussed. The target for this development is reaching higher strengths without loosing too much deformability or with even gaining ductility. A new hyper deep drawing grade (HDDQ) characterised by exceptional tensile test properties and an excellent FLC shows that still important improvements can be realised on the existing vacuum degassed softer qualities. Applying this HDDQ grade, new designs can become possible. Austenitic stainless steel grades for automotive applications are challenging conventional low alloyed steel grades due to their very good mechanical properties. In order to apply these grades together with carbon steels, research is needed to overcome manufacturing problems.
