A new generation of smart pigs are available that combine previously separate anomaly detection technologies. These advances have enabled Buckeye Pipe Line Co. to utilize two pig runs to gather the data of four different technologies. On one run, the company uses a deformation tool equipped with inertial navigation system/global positioning system (INS/GPS) capabilites. This pig identifies internal geometry changes in the pipe line's body wall, and provides a digital, three-dimensional map of the pipe line's geographical position. On a second run, Buckeye uses a high-resolution magnetic flux leakage (MFL) pig that is equipped with residual magnetic field sensors. This pig not only detects corrosion-related defects and anomalies, but also distinguishes internal from external corrosion. More recently, additional capabilities have been proven and are being integrated onto a prototype tool, which allow for even better anomaly detection and characterization. These capabilities include high and low magnetic levels, for metal loss and structural damage detection and discrimination, multi-axial sensors, for better anomaly length and width determination, multi-magnetic orientations, including circumferentially oriented magnetization, to better detect and characterize longitudinally oriented anomalies. Combining these capabilities into one survey tool will enable operators to obtain more comprehensive information, which facilitates better maintenance and repair decisions. The prototype tool, which currently incorporates five previously separate technologies, offers the promise of obtaining multiple data sets in one run.
