The use of fibre reinforced plastic composite (FRP) for primary bulkheads in an otherwise steel hull means that a thorough understanding of how such a mixed structure behaves had to be developed, especially at the interface between the FRP and steel. In this paper, the decision on the thorough thickness dimensions on the composite sandwich panel as a bulkhead is described. The decision was made to satisfy both structural and fire performance requirements. It was fond that satisfactory bonded connections between steel and FRP sandwich panels can be designed with good mechanical performance. Symmetric rather than asymmetric joints were found to be preferable for connection designs. The type A connection in tension was found to provide better mechanical performance than the existing type B joint. The bonded interfaces in type A joint were found to be the weakest point of the connection in all cases.
