Automated Tape Placement (ATP) is widely used in the aerospace industry to produce large composite structures with complex geometry. A group consisting of Science Research Laboratory, Applied Poleramic, Inc., NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and Northrop-Grumman is currently developing resins, tape, and electron-beam gun technology for in-situ electron-beam (EB) curing of ATP composites. This innovative process has the potential to decrease the costs of fabricating composite parts, especially for large, integrated structures. A system for ATP with in-situ EB cure has been built. This paper describes the design of the system and presents preliminary results of the first demonstration of in-situ EB curing during automated tape placement.
