Topology design methods are useful tools for conceptual design of structural components because they can be used to represent nearly any shape and connectivity. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) is well suited to this class of problems because of its binary chromosome storage and global search capabilities. Previous research has demonstrated that a GA can be coupled with a structural analysis to perform discrete topology design. The current research focuses on beam cross-section design for which the shear center location is critical. The bending behavior of a beam can be modified by changing the location of the shear center relative to the location of applied loads. An application of this would be to decouple the bending and torsion modes of a helicopter rotor blade by locating the shear center at the aerodynamic center of the blade cross-section. A sample shear center design problem is demonstrated, followed by a more complex example of how a rotor cross-section design could be performed. The topology GA shows promise for helicopter rotor design problems, but the computational cost may be prohibitive for many practical problems.
