The initial wind tunnel testing results of a Remote Piloted Aircraft (RPV) that uses an adaptive wing are presented. The focus of this study is to test the aeroelastic response and control of a 3-D adaptive wing. Ailerons were also designed into the wing for comparison between structurally adaptive and aerodynamic control surface methods. The design methodology is explained including the analytical tools that were used to model and simulate the adaptive wing aeroelastic behaviour. The design of the wing control interface is discussed in addition to the experimental layout. The wind-tunnel tests of the stand-alone wing test article and of a RPV that uses the 3-D CFRP modified adaptive wing are presented for the open- and closed-loop situations. The wind-tunnel testing quantified the effectiveness of the piezoelectric actuation performance, and also provided comparison data relative to conventional control schemes that use aerodynamic control surfaces. The results indicate that active skin elements provide aeroelastic suppression with greater control authority.
