Although the concept of active noise control was first introduced about seven decades ago, it is the recent advances in the DSP-based on-line computational capabilities, adaptive control theory, compact low frequency acoustic drivers, and understanding the dynamics of vibro-acoustic systems, that have enabled the feasibility of commercial active noise control and active vibration control systems. In addition to describing the fundamentals of active technology, this paper presents a hybrid adaptive control approach for the design of an active system. The combined feedforward/feedback active controller provides the ability to attenuate both repetitive and random excitations. Results from the application of this technology to the automotive vehicles will be illustrated and discussed.
