SAFT has recently developed a complete range of industrial Li-Ion batteries in order to address the different requirements of the automotive industry, either for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs) or hybrid vehicles (HVs). In that purpose, high energy, medium range and high power cells are proposed. All these products are elaborated using highly standardized basic components and designs and manufactured on a new pilot line. The purpose of this paper is to describe the performance of high energy cells with respect to the main characteristics expected from a battery: energy and power densities, self-discharge rate, temperature range for charge and discharge, abuse tolerance behaviour, etc... Life duration will be also discussed in terms of: Cycle life, using various cycling conditions like constant current or DST (dynamic stress test) at different temperatures (mainly 20 deg C and 40 deg C); calendar life, i.e. evolution of performance as a function of time during storage at different temperatures (from 20 deg C to 60 deg C) and states of charge. Besides very favorable initial performance, Saft Li-Ion batteries have demonstrated over 900 cycles of cycle life while projected calendar life can be established in a range of 5 to 13 years depending on their state of charge during storage.
