The market demands for a higher fuel-efficient engine with reduced emissions necessitates the use of an inverter controlled motor for backup during starting and heavy load conditions. The replacement of mechanical and pneumatic automotive systems with electric drives also relieves the engine from supporting features such as steering, braking, and blower control. Maintaining present day passenger space requires the mounting of these systems within the engine compartment where ambient temperatures of +125 deg C and vibration demands of 20 g are not uncommon. Combine this excessive ambient with the high ripple currents from the power input of 3 kW 10 kW drives, and internal operating temperatures of the filter capacitors can easily exceed +140 deg C. The traditional grade of capacitor simply cannot withstand such harsh conditions. Nippon Chemi-Con is at the forefront of automotive filter capacitor technology with it's well established +125 deg C rated devices and has recently developed the world's first continuous +150 deg C rated aluminum electrolytic specifically designed to meet the ambient, ripple currents and vibration requirements of these applications. The new U787D offers 2000 hours of continual operation under +150 deg C ambient with full rated voltage and ripple current applied. This paper will review the requirements of ULEV inverter filter capacitors and discuss the obstacles overcome and new technologies necessary in the development of a true + 150 Cel rated aluminum electrolytic. In addition detailed test results of life under full rated conditions will be reported and conclude with the attributes of the device related to the rigorous environment of ULEV applications.
