The expertise of Rivolta Engineering and Marketing, combined with that of researchers at the University of South Florida, Clean Energy and Vehicle Research Center, has been utilized in the development of the Rivolta-Isigo Neighborhood EV. Particular emphasis was placed on the operational characteristics; quality and cost of the various components needed to convert the Isigo to electric propulsion. Design considerations included requirements for vehicle weight, available space, maximum speed, acceleration and range. On the basis of parameters obtained using the above considerations, commercially available components were utilized to ensure proper availability and minimum cost. Crucial components investigated were: batteries, motor, controller, charger, state of charge indicator and regenerative braking. The Isigo EV design was performance analyzed using an Awesim computer simulation. The simulation covered the vehicle dynamics of the Isigo EV variant with several potential drive trains including flooded lead-acid batteries and a series DC traction motor controlled by a chopper and an advanced gel cell battery with an AC induction motor controlled by an inverter. The vehicle and drive were evaluated on a modified EEC urban driving cycle with the maximum speed at 28 mph (45 km/h). The simulation results verified the capability of the selected drive components to meet the performance specifications. Due to the results of the economic trade-off studies the variant with the flooded lead acid battery and DC series traction motor with chopper control was built. With a 72 V DC system and the vehicle at its load design point of 1584 lbs (720 kg), the vehicle achieved a range of 30 miles (48 km) using 115 Ah capacity lead-acid batteries and a maximum speed of 40 mph(64 km/h).
